Making a Difference
-FF/EMT-Intermediate Ryan Williams, Pleasant Hill Fire Department
Often it is not emergency medical services that make the
difference in sudden cardiac arrest. Sure, we have the
expensive equipment: heart monitors, endotracheal
intubation kits, intravenous access and targeted
medications... but even with all this we don't make the
difference, we merely try to make a difference. The fastest
vehicles just cannot get us there in time. The real difference
in cardiac arrest, and many other emergencies is made by
everyday people, who happen to be in the right place, at the
right time to make a difference.
The American heart association lists the primary factors for
survivability in cardiac arrest as: Early recognition of a
cardiac emergency, early 9-1-1, early CPR, early
defibrilation, early advanced EMS care and early hospital
intervention. As EMS, we only arrive minutes after an
emergency occurs. The highest rates of survivability occur in
those that receive defibrilation within six of those precious
minutes.
Cardiopulmonary resuscitation, or CPR is a vital component
for the survival of a cardiac emergency, and the best part is
that it requires no special equipment. In fact, the recent 2010
ACLS guidelines indicate that compression only CPR,
performing chest compressions only without providing mouth
to mouth ventilation, until the arrival of emergency services
can dramatically increase survivability.
Pleasant Hill Fire Department offers CPR training, including
training in the use of automatic external defibrilators (AED) to
those that live within the district free of charge. Contact us to
see how you can be more prepared for when you are in the
right place at the right time to make a difference in the life of
one of your neighbors.

Not all Fires are the Same and Neither are their
extinguishers.
And no, we are not talking about the unique qualities of
each of our firefighters, proficient in extinguishing as
they are. We are talking about the fire extinguishers we
walk past in our daily lives. Red ones, silver ones, ones
with big bell nozzles, and some with a little hose.
Do you know how to use one safely? We all know where
they are, but if we had an emergency need to use one
would we know how?
Contact us at 541-747-8016 or visit the "Contact Us" link
at the top of this page to inquire about our fire
extinguisher safety courses. This quick class will make
you more prepared the next time you find yourself in the
right place at the right time to make a difference.
"I am only one, but I am one. I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can
do." -Edward Everett Hale, early American Literary Prodigy
"Emergency is being in the wrong place at the wrong time. Preparedness is being in the right place at the right time to make a
difference." - Ryan D. Williams, later American PHFD firefighter/EMT.
For the Kids!!!
Contact Pleasant Hill Fire for your next field trip or
family adventure.
We know that emergencies can happen at any time,
and it can be a scary experience, especially for young
children. A firefighter in full protective equipment can
be a disturbing sight if you don't know that they are
there to help.
We are excited to share what we do with the children of
our community and help instil the knowledge within
them of what to do during an emergency. Click on

fire house experience for the younger ones.
